“…EC is the fifth most common type of cancer and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) accounts for 90% of all EC cases (3,4). According to data from the National Central Cancer Registry of China, 477,900 new EC cases and 375,000 cases of mortality occurred in 2015 (5). The majority of EC patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage when the 5-year survival rate is ~20%, though early detected EC can be treated with endoscopic resection, and has a 5-year survival rate of up to 95% (6).…”

“…Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the 4th most common cause of cancer-associated mortality and the fifth most frequently diagnosed cancer type in China (1). ESCC is a highly aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis due to the fact that the majority of tumors are asymptomatic until they have reached advanced stages (1).…”

“…ESCC is a highly aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis due to the fact that the majority of tumors are asymptomatic until they have reached advanced stages (1). At present, concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has been established as an important approach for patients with locally advanced carcinoma of the esophagus (2).…”

“…Of the two predominant histologic types, adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (scc), scc accounts for 95% of all Chinese eca patients, and more than 50% of ecas are at a locally advanced stage when diagnosed 1 . The lack of a serosal layer in the esophagus and the location of this conduit in a very narrow mediastinal space allows for tumour invasion into the local structures, which represents disease stage T4 2 .…”
