Treatment of berberine 89a and palmatine 89b with allyltributyltin gives the 8-allyldihydro compounds 90a and 90b, and these react readily with reactive halides such as ethyl bromoacetate, phenacyl bromide and benzyl bromide to give 13substituted berberines 93a and 93b directly, the process probably involving alkylation of the enamine to give the iminium salts 91a, 91b and 91c, followed by [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to 92 and elimination of propene.…”
