Escherichia coli interactions with Acanthamoeba: a symbiosis with environmental and clinical implications

Abstract: The ability of Acanthamoeba to feed on Gram-negative bacteria, as well as to harbour potential pathogens, such as Legionella pneumophila, Coxiella burnetii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio cholerae, Helicobacter pylori, Listeria monocytogenes and Mycobacterium avium, suggest that both amoebae and bacteria are involved in complex interactions, which may play important roles in the environment and in human health. In this study, Acanthamoeba castellanii (a keratitis isolate belonging to the T4 genotype) was used … Show more

“…pneumoniae, E. aerogenes, R. terrigena, and R. ornitholytica. Previous data demonstrated that Enterobacteriaceae can survive and multiply within amoeba host [23,[35][36][37][38][39] which is consistent with our findings. At 48h co-incubation, the intracellular counts for all bacteria in our study decreased onwards.…”

“…E. coli K1 strain RS218 (O18 : K1 : H7) is a cerebrospinal fluid isolate from a neonate with meningitis (Silver et al, 1980;Achtman et al, 1983). Several isogenic gene-deletion mutants of K1 were used, including a fimH-deletion mutant (DfimH) (Alsam et al, 2006;Khan et al, 2007), an ompAdeletion mutant (DompA) (Khan et al, 2003) and a cnf1-deletion mutant (Dcnf1) (Khan et al, 2002(Khan et al, , 2003. In addition, a capsuledeletion mutant (DneuDB) derived from K1 was used Jung et al, 2007).…”

“…The role of free-living protozoa in the ecology and epidemiology of food-borne pathogens such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli has already been documented (31)(32)(33), but for Y. enterocolitica, only brief descriptions of intraprotozoan replication, probably followed by the killing and digestion of the bacterial strain (34), and increased resistance to free chlorine in their early intraprotozoan lifestyle (19) have been reported so far.…”
