Escalating insecticide resistance in Australian grain pests: contributing factors, industry trends and management opportunities

Abstract: Insecticide resistance is an ever‐increasing problem that threatens food production globally. Within Australia, the grain industry has a renewed focus on resistance due to diminishing chemical options available to farmers and the increasing prevalence and severity of resistance encountered in the field. Chemicals are too often used as the major tool for arthropod pest management, ignoring the potent evolutionary forces from chemical selection pressures that lead to resistance. A complex array of factors (biolo… Show more

“…Insecticide seed treatments in cereals have become commonplace in parts of south‐eastern Australia where D. noxia is present (Umina et al . ). In part, this is due to farmers' uncertainty about the impacts D. noxia can have and the inability to confidently assess crop risk (Umina et al .…”

“…Unfortunately, within Australia, there is very limited opportunity to rotate cereal seed dressings with neonicotinoid‐free products as there are, effectively, no other classes of insecticide seed dressings targeting the same pest spectrum (Umina et al . ). Protecting natural enemies associated with D. noxia will help decrease the potential for insecticide resistance by reducing the intensity of chemical applications.…”

“…41 The status of insecticide resistance in Australian grain insects was covered. 42 The molecular mechanisms of rice resistance to rice planthoppers was analyzed. 43 In 2020, we will publish two special issues; one consisting of papers from the 14th IUPAC Congress on Crop Protection held in May, 2019 and the other with papers from two symposia from the 258th Agrochemical Division of the American Chemical Society held in August, 2019.…”
