PLANNING TECHNOLOGICAL BUSINESSES:A Originality/gap/relevance/implications: The paper attempts to empirically validate the model proposed by Reis, Ladeira, and Fernandes (2015). In this regard, the paper facilitates the interpretation and application of concepts relevant to the business model's definition, thereby contributing to an estimation between theory and entrepreneurial practice. Key methodological aspects: The research is qualitative and adopts an action research methodology regarding 10 participating projects of the Incentive Program for Innovation held in the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais. We conducted interviews with 38 professionals in order to understand the model's applicability in different contexts and to assess convergences and differences between each analyzed case. Summary of key results: The model's application proved to be relevant mainly for the early stages of business planning. The inclusion of the minimum viable product in the model helped with resource design and the development of a product with similar characteristics to market needs. It was suggested that the criteria used to assist the decision--making process were evaluated and selected by the team in accordance with the intended business strategy. Key considerations/conclusions: It is suggested that future research evaluates the inclusion of i) risk analysis and a contingency plan for the proposed business model and ii) the valuation of technology as an important step for projects that include the transfer of technology to established companies.1678-6971 (electronic version) • http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1678-69712017/administracao.v18n3p70-116. The classical approach to modelling the thermomechanical response of composites employs a framework embodied within the concept of continuum mechanics. This approach may not always lead to success in that some failure mechanisms such as molecular scale phenomena may not be accurately captured by the continuum approximation. On the other hand, the continuum approach may be quite powerful and accurate for predicting failure in a variety of circumstances. For any continuum mechanics based approach to have hope of accuracy it is, however, necessary for that model to in some sense capture the physics of all of the cogent energy dissipative processes that are engendered in the actual application. The current paper takes the approach that failure due to fracture in viscoelastic composites can indeed be modelled entirely within the framework of continuum mechanics, but that in order to accurately predict failure due to fracture it is often necessary to deploy a model that is simultaneously cast within multiple length scales, each using the framework of continuum mechanics. This approach is taken for the simple reason that experimental observation suggests that in viscoelastic composites cracks form on the microscale, and these cracks eventually coalesce into macroscale cracks that cause the part to fail due to catastrophic facture. While predictions of these events may seem extraordinarily costly and complex, there are multiple structural applications where effective models would save considerable expense. The formulation for such an approach will be presented herein. This approach has been implemented into a finite element code and some example problems will be given in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the method.

This article aims to examine the influence of the strategic background and of the business model elements on its value proposition, and to investigate the relationship between the value proposition and the performance of e-business. The research is supported theoretically by the Technological, Organizational and Environmental framework (TOE), derived from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT), for the Strategic Background (IFINEDO, 2011), by the Business Model theory (OSTERWALDER; PIGNEUR; 2010; SOUZA; BATISTA, 2014) and by the business performance literature (RAMANUJAN; VENKATRAMAN, 1987). We tested the proposed model with a sample of 252 observations, using the structural equation modeling. The main results indicate a partial influence of the strategic background in the value proposition through the constructs management positioning, organizational readiness, relative advantage and pressure from stakeholders. Relating to the business model, the constructs of market segmentation, customer relationships, capabilities, partnerships and revenue model influence the value proposition, which in turn affects positively the performance of e-business companies.
