Erythroplasia of Queyrat treated with topical methyl aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy

Abstract: An 82-year-old man presented with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the glans penis arising in erythroplasia of Queyrat. He underwent Mohs' micrographic surgery for the invasive carcinoma. Seven weeks later, the residual erythroplasia of Queyrat was treated using photodynamic therapy. Methyl aminolevulinate cream was applied to the glans of the penis under occlusion for 3 hours and then, after local anaesthesia, irradiated with a 630-nm red-light-emitting diode lamp at a dose of 37 J/cm(2) for 8 min. The pat… Show more

“…Surgical excision is the treatment of choice made by most healthcare professionals; it was done in six of the 13 cases. Other treatments have been proposed, such as: topical retinoic acid with systemic beta-carotens; 22 photodynamic therapy with methyl aminolevulinate; 23 and cryosurgery or vaporization with carbon dioxide laser radiation. 24 These approaches also include cessation of risk factors.…”

“…Although the small number of reported cases (5 patients to date [8,9]) does not allow a relevant statistical comparison of the success of this therapy, our results document a favourable outcome after PDT for some of the patients and underline the importance of repeated treatment. Indeed, the mean number of PDT sessions in our patient collective was 12.3 in the complete response group, 10.3 in the partial remission group, whereas it was only 2.8 in the progression group.…”

“…Two further patients with more extensive disease achieved partial response after 2 cycles of 5-aminolaevulinic acid PDT and required laser vaporization [8]. Lee and Ryman [9] reported an 82-year-old patient with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the glans penis arising in EQ. While he underwent Mohs micrographic surgery for his invasive carcinoma, his residual EQ was treated by PDT.…”
