Erythrocyte and reticulocyte parameters in iron deficiency and thalassemia

Abstract: Erythrocytosis and severe microcytosis, together with a high percentage of microcytes and a moderate increase in IRF, is the profile of β-thalassemia carriers, whereas anisocytosis and the hypochromic subset correlates with the severity of the anemia in iron-deficient patients.

“…Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies, worldwide, and this deficiency is responsible for frequent disability and death. The main causes of iron balance are excessive menstrual bleeding in women of childbearing age and chronic blood loss in the gastrointestinal tracts of elderly subjects (Urrechaga et al, 2011). Iron deficiency progresses from replete iron stores to a depletion of iron stored in the body.…”

“…The count depends on total RBC count [12]. For both the pathophysiological classiication of anemia and to monitor marrow response after therapeutic interventions, reticulocyte count is clinically important [11,19].…”
