Erythrocyte and dietary zinc in adolescent females

Abstract: Erythrocyte zinc has been suggested as an index of zinc status. This study was undertaken to investigate the possible relationships of erythrocyte zinc concentration to age, physical maturity, and zinc intake of teenage girls of two races. Dietary zinc was calculated from two 1-day food recalls, and erythrocyte zinc was determined for over three hundred 12-, 14- and 16-yr-old girls in Oklahoma and Virginia. Erythrocyte zinc concentration increased and the intake of zinc from the diet decreased after attainment… Show more

“…PZ was estimated by the wet digestion method using three acid mixture (HNO3:HClO4: H2SO4 in 3:2:1 proportion) and deionised distilled water as per the manual of National Institute of Nutrition, India (Raghuramulu et al, 2003) using atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) (Perkin Elmer Model 3110, Waltham, MA) with a specific cathode lamp. Erythrocyte (RBC) zinc was measured as per the method by Kenney et al (1984). Weighed aliquots of red cells (0.5 to 1 g) were digested with the similar acid mixture and diluted with deionized water to estimate zinc by AAS.…”

“…Plasma zinc levels were low (<0.7 mg/l) (41) in 72.4%, and erythrocyte zinc levels were low (<8 µg/g of packed cells) (56) in 23.6% of the girls. Prevalence of anemia (Hb < 12 g/dl) was 27.2%, and 26.6% girls had low serum ferritin lpar; (<12 µg/l) (67).…”

“…Serum ferritin was estimated by Fully Automated Bidirectionally Interfaced Chemi Luminescent Immuno Assay. Plasma levels of zinc, vitamin C, β-carotene and retinol were measured as per the methods in the manual by National Institute of Nutrition, India (55), and erythrocyte zinc was measured as per the method described by Kenny et al (56). Reference serum (RANDOX Laboratories, India) was used as a standard for blood estimations.…”

“…Hemoglobin concentration was measured using the cyanmethhemoglobin method. Erythrocyte lysate was diluted 10 fold with milli-Q water; zinc and copper concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (3110, Perkin Elmer, Waltham, MA, USA) 13,14 and values were expressed as micrograms of zinc per g of hemoglobin. Stool samples of chronic pancreatitis patients were collected and stored at -4°C for less than one week prior to use.…”
