“…NIR induces photoaging similar to that observed in solar elastosis, and enhances UV-induced dermal damage [25]. Long-term exposure of NIR from various heat sources, such as fires and stoves, results in erythema ab igne [26], and results in histopathological changes similar to those seen in solar-damaged skin [27]. The occurrence of telangiectasia appeared to increase with age, increased sunbathing, and poor pigmentation ability [28].…”

“…The skin temperatures achieved are probably within the region of 43°to 47°C (Hardy et al 1965) which is insufficient to cause unbearable pain or burning. The pathology of the skin changes and proposed mechanisms are discussed elsewhere (Finlayson et al 1966, Johnson & Butterworth 1971, Kligerman & Kligerman 1984, Shahrad & Marks 1977, Waldorf et al 1971, as is the documentation of pre-malignant and malignant skin changes within areas of established EAI (Arrington & Lockman 1979, Cross 1967, Grant-Peterkin 1955. All 5 patients reported here had been applying hot-water bottles to the painful area tor at least one month, and a precise history of two and a half months was obtained in one case.…”

“…5 There is also an accumulation of elastic tissue in the superior dermis. 5,6 ASome cases exhibit hyperkeratosis and epidermal dysplasia, similar to actinic keratosis. 3,4,6 The lesion characteristic of EAI associated to a history of excessive exposure to heat in the area of onset facilitates clinical diagnosis of this disease.…”

“…[1][2][3] It is characterized by reticulate erythema, hyperpigmentation, scaling, epidermal atrophies and telangiectasis, present in areas of prolonged exposure to thermal radiation. [4][5][6] It is usually asymptomatic, but patients can refer to ardor and pruritus. 6 The lesion is acquired by repeated and prolonged 7 exposure to infrared radiation at temperatures up to 45°C.…”
