Error Estimations in Digital Image Correlation Technique

Abstract: The reliability for each measurement technique depends on the knowledge of it’s uncertainty and the sources of errors of the results. Among the different techniques for optical measurement techniques for full field analysis of displacements and strains, digital image correlation (DIC) has been proven to be very flexible, robust and easy to use, covering a wide range of different applications. Nevertheless the measurement results are influenced by statistical and systematical errors. We discuss a 3D digital ima… Show more

“…Its purpose lies is the determination of cameras imaging the parameters as well as the external positions and orientations of the cameras with respect to global coordinate system. System calibration is needed to transform image positions on the CCDs of the two cameras of an object surface point to the corresponding 3D coordinates of that point [5].…”

“…It can be observed that the quality of correlation process significantly decreases if the facets are too small. If the facets are too large, a systematic error increases because of spatial distortion of the facets [5]. The object of measurement was a circular plate with diameter of 150 mm, thickness of 1.5 mm, made of steel sheet.…”

“…Since the beginning of the DIC system development, its working principles and errors estimation has always been an interesting area of research. Pan et al [1] and Sutton et al [3] described the DIC system working principles and McCluskey [6], Bornert et al [7], Siebert et al [8] identified possible error sources which can cause displacement and strain measurement errors.…”
