“…This research is qualitative in nature and uses visual data, specifically photographs, as a data source (Rose, 2016). Photographs are used as a valid and useful method for collecting data in social research, as they have the power to convey meanings and communicate messages, both by themselves and when combined with textual data and as such can be subjected to thematic analysis (Langmann and Pick, 2018). In the hospitality and tourism field, the number of qualitative studies using visual research methods is increasing (Rakić and Chambers, 2012).…”

“…Thematic analysis is an independent research approach within the qualitative descriptive methodologies defined as a method for identifying, analyzing and reporting common patterns of meanings within data sets in relation to the phenomenon to be investigated (Braun and Clarke, 2006: p. 79; Nowell et al , 2017). Therefore, a photo-thematic analysis (Langmann and Pick, 2018, p. 111) was conducted on the database of photographs gathered to capture their manifest and latent meanings in relation to city hospitality disclosure. The photographs were subjected to thematic analysis alone, i.e.…”

“…Photos were originally treated from within a representational framework, that is, as a mirror reflecting reality and what is present in anthropological studies aiming to capture the world as it really is. However, recently, photographs’ use seems more consistent with the idea of performing the world as it becomes (Langmann & Pick, 2018). Like in the case of the photo with the ladder (Photo 1), such becoming seems inclusive and denotative of both what is present and what is absent in visual data, denotative of a continuous interplay between both.…”

“…Photos are argued as providing a certain quality of evidence, given that they can capture what is impossible to capture, like a nonliving person or an event from the past (Harper, 2002; Peim, 2005). Photo-elicitation, by inviting the subject and not the researcher to speak (Langmann & Pick, 2018), has been further argued as facilitating a common ground of understanding between the researcher and the researched (Harper, 2002).…”
