Erratum: Coexistence of spherical states with deformed and superdeformed bands in doubly magicCa40: A shell-model challenge [Phys. Rev. C75, 054317 (2007)]

Abstract: Large scale shell model calculations, with dimensions reaching 10 9 , are carried out to describe the recently observed deformed (ND) and superdeformed (SD) bands based on the first and second excited 0 + states of 40 Ca at 3.35 MeV and 5.21 MeV respectively. A valence space comprising two major oscillator shells, sd and pf , can accommodate most of the relevant degrees of freedom of this problem. The ND band is dominated by configurations with four particles promoted to the pf -shell (4p-4h in short). The SD … Show more

“…This may turn out to be the same underlying mechanism in our present IBM-CM study. This study of the actual wave function content and the way to test it has, more recently, been explored, e.g., in the study of the nucleus 40 Ca [86]. It turns out that the 0 + ground state only consists of 65% closed sd shell (or 0p-0h) and exhibits 29% of 2p-2h excitations out of the 2s 1/2 , 1d 3/2 normally filled orbitals into the 1f 7/2 , 2p 3/2 , 1f 5/2 , 2p 1/2 higher-lying orbitals, even containing up to 5% of 4p-4h excitations.…”

“…These same techniques led to the discovery around ten years ago, of SD bands in the light, alpha-conjugate nuclei, 36 Ar [4] and 40 Ca [5]. These form fascinating examples of superdeformation since complementary descriptions can be found in terms of particlehole excitations in the shell model [6,7], and α-clustering configurations within various cluster models [8][9][10]. Key theoretical questions center on whether the clustering is a real feature of the system, or whether it simply corresponds to the appearances but is not a true physical description.…”

“…Many theoretical studies using these two approaches followed after the experimental reports were published on 36 Ar and 40 Ca. * m.oi@surrey.ac.uk Shell-model diagonalizations were performed by Svensson et al [1], Caurier et al [8,9], and Poves [10], with the removal of the d 5/2 orbital from the sd-pf shells and with the corresponding effective interaction. Recently, they attempted to give a consistent description of the SD and normal deformed states in 40 Ca [9].…”
