Erosion/redeposition analysis of the ITER first wall with convective and non-convective plasma transport

Abstract: Sputtering erosion/redeposition is analyzed for ITER [IAEA Report GA10FDR1-01-07-13(2001)] plasma facing components, with scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma convective radial transport and non-convective (diffusion-only) transport. The analysis uses the UEDGE code [T.D. Rognlien et al., J. Nuc. Mat. 196(1992)

“…However tritium will still be codeposited with beryllium. Over each operational day of fifteen 400 s duration plasma pulses a layer up to 6 -12 microns of codeposited tritium with beryllium is projected to accumulate on the ITER baffle (estimated growth rate of order 1-2 nm/s) [24,25]. Strong thermal cycling and mechanical vibrations are expected.…”

“…For the reference edge plasma solution [4,5]-with electron temperature and D-T ion flux at/to the outer divertor shown in Fig. 1-the net and gross erosion of tungsten is found to be negligible.…”

“…This source-as given by Ref. [5] analysis-is time independent. The second term on the rhs of (1)-varying with time due to changes in divertor surface composition-is the incident flux of Be to segment i resulting from sputtering of the divertor, where C out;j Be;S is the sputtered flux from segment 'j' and A S (j, i) is the redeposition matrix element giving the fraction of sputtered flux from segment j that is deposited on segment i.…”

“…SOL convective/blob transport is an active area of research and its effect on the transport of wall sputtered ions is unclear. Three phemonological models that simulate the range of possible physics are described in [22]. Use of emission lines from tungsten ions would minimise these complications, but there is very little atomic data for the lower charge states.…”
