Long-term pollution by chlordecone of tropical volcanic soils in the French West Indies: New insights and improvement of previous predictions

“…A study on nitisol in Martinique reported low erosion rates in banana fields (0.4 to 0.6 t.ha -1 .yr -1 ) and in sugar cane fields (< 0.2 t.ha -1 .yr -1 ), but higher erosion rates in mechanized pineapple fields (5 to 29 t.ha -1 .yr -1 ) and bare soils (85 to 165 t.ha -1 .yr -1 ) (Khamsouk, 2001). Saffache (Saffache, 2000) extrapolated sediment losses to equal 39.6 t.ha -1 .yr -1 on farmed soils in an experiment using a mini rain simulator on 1m² fields. Rad et al (Rad et al, 2006) proposed an approximate mechanical weathering rate of 8-40 t.ha -1 .yr -1 for Guadeloupe based on a geochemical study of dissolved and solid matter in rivers.…”
