Field experiments show that wheat grown after oilseed rape (OSR) achieves higher yield levels, while the nitrogen (N) application is reduced. However, field experiment data are based on few locations with optimised management. We analysed a large dataset based on farm data to assess the true extent of break crop benefits (BCB) for yield and N fertilisation within German commercial farming.Across all German states and years, average yield of wheat preceded by OSR was 0.56 Mg ha −1 higher than yield of wheat preceded by cereals (7.09 Mg ha −1 ), although considerable variation between regions was observed. Mean N application across all states to wheat after OSR was 5 kg ha −1 lower than to wheat after cereals. Choice of wheat types for different end uses (bread flour or animal feed) showed higher (0.77 Mg ha ) BCB for yield of wheat cultivated after OSR compared with after cereals. The calculated BCB for yield and N fertilisation were lower than expected from dedicated field experiments and fertiliser recommendations. Thus the advantages of OSR as a preceding crop are generally utilised by commercial farmers in Germany but there is room for improvement. ARTICLE HISTORY

The Colorado beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), is one of the most important pests in many potato-producing regions. Colorado beetle infestations are normally kept under economic damage thresholds by applying insecticides such as pyrethroids. Pyrethroids are known to act on voltage-gated sodium channels and have been used for several decades to control L. decemlineata. Their continuous and widespread use has resulted in the development of resistance, which is often linked to a L1014F target-site mutation in the voltagegated sodium channel, known as knockdown resistance (kdr). Since pyrethroids are used in many potato-growing regions in Germany, more than 140 L. decemlineata samples were collected and analysed for the presence of the kdr allele by pyrosequencing diagnostics. Results showed that kdr is present in many German L. decemlineata populations, but even its homozygous presence does not substantially compromise the efficacy of recommended label rates of pyrethroids, as demonstrated by bioassays and crossing experiments. The implications of these findings for resistance management are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Copper pesticides used to control fungal and bacterial diseases such as grapes downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), downy mildew of hops (Pseudoperonospora humili), apple scab (Venturia spp.), fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) and potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans), play an important role in plant protection. In a 2013 survey of copper application in Germany we found, that while the amounts of copper used per hectare in conventional grape (0.8 kg ha −1 ), hop (1.7 kg ha −1 ) and potato-farming (0.8 kg ha −1 ) were well below those used in organic farming (2.3, 2.6 and 1.4 kg ha −1 , respectively), they were nearly identical to those used in apple growing (1.4 kg ha −1 ). Due to the smaller farming area, only 24% (26.5 tonnes) of the total amount of copper was applied in organic farming compared to 76% (84.8 tonnes) in conventional farming. Since 2001, the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) promoted a copper research and minimization strategy which was funded with a total of C10.2 million. Our status quo analysis of research in this field shows that some progress is being made concerning alternative compounds, resistant varieties and decision support systems. However, it also shows that new approaches are not yet able to replace copper pesticides completely, especially in organic farming. In integrated pest management, copper preparations are important for the necessary active substance rotation and successful resistance management. The availability of such products is often essential for organic grapes, hops and fruit production and for extending the organic farming of these crops. We conclude that the complete elimination of copper pesticides is not yet practicable in organic farming as the production of several organic crops would become unprofitable and may lead to organic farmers reverting to conventional production. Several existing copper reduction strategies were, however, identified, and some, like modified forecast models adapted to organic farming, varieties more resistant to fungal diseases and new alternative products, already contribute to copper minimization in German agriculture.
