Ergonomic clusters and displaced affordances in early lithic technology

Abstract: Traditional typological, technical, and cognitive approaches to early stone tools have taken an implicit Cartesian stance concerning the nature of mind. In many cases, this has led to interpretations of early technology that overemphasize its human-like features. By eschewing an epistemic mediator, 4E approaches to cognition (embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended) are in a better position to make appropriate evaluations of early hominin technical cognition that emphasize its continuity with non-h… Show more

“…We note that task constraints extend beyond the production of the tool and encompass the purpose to which the tool will be put. These constraints would come under the heading of ‘displaced affordances’ (Wynn, 2021) in that the purpose (as a future function of the tool) contributes to an understanding of its form and use. So, as noted above, an appropriate tool for cutting and slicing need not be appropriate for bone cracking (and vice versa).…”

“…These imperatives relate to the form of the stone, for example, glob-butt, forwardextension (relating to centre of gravity and distribution of mass), support for working edge, lateral extension (around the major plane), thickness adjustment and skewness. This set of imperatives is expanded upon by Wynn (2021) to relate their form to generic functions to which they can be applied. Gowlett argues that, '... biface manufacture cannot be governed by a simple fixed ''mental template,'' since this would yield neither the fields of variation within a dataset, nor the local variations observed from site to site and even within sites' (Gowlett, 2006, p. 4, our emphasis).…”

“…There can be no doubt, however, that the Acheulean is the oldest cultural manifestation commonly seen to be relevant to these issues (e.g. Le Tensorer, 2006; Wynn, 2021). In this perspective, Acheulean bifaces, ranging through much more than a million years of human evolution, are likely to be illustrative in some respect of more widely operating factors and processes in early hominin behaviour.…”

“…As such self-organization may hold insights applicable to human cognitive evolution and tool use more generally, these insights from writing are applied to stone tools, with the goal of understanding how the ability to leverage material forms for cognitive purposes might have emerged. (Readers interested in illustrations of stone tools might consult the article by Wynn, 2021. )…”
