Ergogenic Effects of Sodium Bicarbonate

Abstract: Athletes use many different strategies to enhance their performance, including clothing and footwear, training regimes, diets, and ergogenic aids. The use of ergogenic aids is believed to be widespread, with a variety of legal as well as illegal substances being used previously and currently. Among the more popular ergogenic aids is the use of sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate, collectively recognized as "buffers." These substances potentially provide the body with added resistance against fatigue caused by… Show more

“…7 While muscle cell membranes are impervious to HCO 3 -, increasing extracellular HCO 3 -increases the pH gradient between intracellular and extracellular environments. 8 As a result, significantly higher blood lactate concentrations [BLa] have been observed following NaHCO 3 -supplementation, 9 suggesting NaHCO 3 -increases the efflux of H + and La -from working muscle into general circulation. As such, during specific exercise protocols (those involving a large anaerobic component), NaHCO 3 -may be efficacious in enhancing exercise performance.…”

“…The primary purpose of ergogenic aids is to reduce fatigue and increase power output. With high-intensity exercise, potential contributors to fatigue can be related to muscle energy production, a decline in muscle adenosine triphosphate (ATP), or impaired electrochemical events of muscle contraction/relaxation production (44). These decrements in performance can also be related to the accumulation of metabolites during exercise such as hydrogen ions resulting from increased lactic acid formation in high intensity exercise (44).…”

These decrements in performance can also be related to the accumulation of metabolites during exercise such as hydrogen ions resulting from increased lactic acid formation in high intensity exercise (44). Creatine monohydrate, and sodium bicarbonate, are two widely-studied ergogenic aids that have shown to attenuate the decline in fatigue while also increasing power output in high intensity exercise bouts such as sprinting (1,3,4,7,8,11,12,16,31,32,55,65,68).…”
