Erectile dysfunction: prevalence and associated variables in patients with chronic renal failure

Abstract: Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) experience a significant decrease in quality of life, due both to the limitations imposed by the disease as well as the demands of the treatment that they receive. Some side effects of both illness and treatment contribute to increase the morbidity of these patients. Among them, erectile dysfunction (ED) is notable. One hundred and nineteen patients received clinical and laboratory evaluation. The following clinical data were observed: age, education, income, race, per… Show more

“…1,2 Studies of patients with ESRD on hemodialysis (HD) have found that 57.9-88% of men have complaints of ED. [3][4][5] This shows that despite the improvements in the treatment of ESRD over the past decade, prevalence of ED remains high. Sexual dysfunction and hypogonadism begin before patients reach ESRD and are not corrected by HD therapy.…”

“…3 Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) recognize a significant reduction in health-related QOL, conceivably due to the restrictions imposed by illness and the demands and intrusiveness of treatment. 4,5 Assessment of the health status of patients on chronic dialysis showed significantly lower scores in physical functioning and in general health compared with healthy controls -dialysis itself appearing to be the main problem to confront. 6 The burden of chronic renal failure is evidenced by the diverse and progressive metabolic, hormonal and emotional derangements experienced by patients in the course to ESRD.…”

“…1,2 As a result of the multisystem disease processes present in many uremic men, it is apparent that the pathogenesis of ED is most probably multifactorial. Factors to be considered include peripheral vascular disease, neurogenic abnormalities, hormonal disturbances and medications used for treatment of conditions associated with CRF.…”
