Erectile Dysfunction

Abstract: Erectile dysfunction is a common problem affecting sexual function in men. Approximately one in 10 men over the age of 40 is affected by this condition and the incidence is age related. Erectile dysfunction is a sentinel marker for several reversible conditions including peripheral and coronary vascular disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Endothelial dysfunction is a common factor between the disease states. Concurrent conditions such as depression, late-onset hypogonadism, Peyronie's disease and lowe… Show more

“…They subsequently signed the informed consent and their anthropometric measurements were collected. To be more familiar with the treadmill walking on the noted speed (2 km/h), participants practiced walking on the treadmill for~5 min [35,36]. After that, Borg's 10-point scale [37] was explained to the participants to be able to report ratings of perceived discomfort (RPDs) for several body parts (see the Dependent Measures subsection).…”

“…Efficacy has also been demonstrated in subpopulations of men with ED including those with DM, neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, hypertension, CAD, renal insufficiency, status postrenal transplant, and after nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy (reviewed in [106]). Several PDE5is, including tadalafil and sildenafil, may be used daily to either minimize as-needed dosing for sexual activity (tadalafil) in the setting of erectile preservation after surgery (tadalafil, sildenafil) or in the setting of men with concomitant LUTS and ED (tadalafil).…”

“…11 Despite the general agreement of previous investigators that the prevalence of impotence in diabetic men approximates 50 per cent, there is controversy surrounding the etiology of this problem. 12,13 Many clinicians have used the nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) study to assist in the differential diagnosis of psychogenic from organogenic sexual dysfunction. The foundation of the test rests on the observations of regularly occurring erection cycles during sleep in healthy, sexually functional men, 14 and abnormally diminished or absent sleep-related erection cycles in organically sexually dysfunctional men 15 Measurements of NPT thus provide an objective and quantitative method for evaluating changes in erectile pattern.…”
