Abstract: We have fabricated and characterized strip waveguides based on an erbium-doped silicon-rich oxide (~SiO) core layer. Efficient non-resonant excitation of the erbium was observed under transverse pumping. However, carrier-induced losses greatly exceed erbium-related gain.
