Equivalent forms of the boston naming test

Abstract: In order to develop a test of naming ability that is sensitive to changes in performance on repeated testing, but is unbiased by practice effects, the 85 items of the Boston Naming Test (BNT) were divided into two 42-item forms. Both forms were given to 15 healthy adult subjects, 24 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and 17 patients with other brain lesions. The reliability of the BNT was high as measured by coefficient alpha and interitem correlations. Performance on the two forms of t… Show more

“…Huff and colleagues (Huff, Collins, Corkin, & Rosen, 1986) published two split-half versions of the original 85-item BNT. The two 42-item versions correlated in the range of .71 to .82 for a small group of normal elderly individuals (n = 15) and at r = .97 for patients with Alzheimer's disease (n = 24) whose scores were significantly below those of the normal subjects.…”

“…Items were ordered by word frequency, from high to low frequency. The two forms of the test are of comparable difficulty, and have high intertest reliability (Huff et al, 1986).…”

“…Modified Boston Naming Test (Huff et al, 1986) used 42 line drawings of common objects, plants, and animals taken from the original 85 item BNT (Kaplan et al, 1976). (Wechsler, 1981) assessed ability to define increasingly difficult words.…”
