Equine amniotic membrane transplantation for corneal ulceration and keratomalacia in three horses

Abstract: Results of a small number of equine AMT suggest that amnion can be used successfully to preserve both globe structure and limited vision, as well as optimize cosmesis, in horse eyes with corneal ulceration and severe keratomalacia.

“…Some reported that human AM used for corneal reconstruction in the human patient was disintegrated (Sridhar et al 2001) or dissolved Letko et al 2001;Rodriguez-Ares et al 2004). Lassaline et al (2005) had used equine AM for corneal reconstruction in 3 horses with corneal ulceration and keratomalacia, and found that the membrane sloughed off over 4-to 6-week period. The AM was unable to be incorporated because the ulcers were infected and malacic.…”

“…Human AM (Kim and Tseng 1995;Tuntivanich and Tuntivanich 2006;Wichayacoop et al 2005), equine AM (Barros et al 1998;Lassaline et al 2005;Ollivier et al 2006), and canine AM (Barros et al 2005) have been used as either a xenograft or an allograft for corneal reconstruction in animals. The AM allografts were also effective in corneal reconstruction after the excision of large neoplasias in 16 human patients , 1 dog (Barros et al 2005), and 9 horses (Ollivier et al 2006).…”

“…Various biomaterials have also been used to repair corneal injuries including amniotic membrane (Lassaline et al . ; Plummer ), submucosa of porcine small intestine (Goulle ) and extracellular matrix of porcine bladder (ACell Vet corneal discs) (Balland et al . ; Mancuso et al .…”

“…In veterinary medicine its utility has been growing. For instance, it has been already used to repair full-thickness defects of the cornea of dogs (Barros et al 1998), generalized keratomalacia, ankyloblepharon, and after fibrous histiocytoma removal in two dogs and a cat (Barros et al 2005), to reconstruct corneal surface after excision of corneolimbal squamous cell carcinomas in nine horses (Olliver et al 2006), and to repair corneal ulceration and keratomalacia in three horses (Lassaline et al 2005).…”
