Abstrad-An extensive study of the detrimental effect of C on critical current densities (ic) of Ag sheathed Bi(2223) tapes has been carried out. High j, can only be obtained if the C content is kept to a minimum. Successive calcination steps at 820°C are effective in reducing the amount of C in the resulting powders. On the other hand, high energy milling increases the amount of C in the powder. Controlled quantities of C impurities were introduced into the powders by performing the calcinations in a CO, rich atmosphere. The j, measured on tapes obtained with C rich precursors are lower by a factor of 2 to 4 than the j, of tapes from powders calcined in air.

Aspects of the development of low-cost (Sr,Ca)3A1206 dielectrics for BizSr2CaCu208ts superconductor applications were investigated. A tie-line phase equilibrium relationship between Bi2Sr2CaCu20Bts and Sr2CaA1206 compositions was observed at 860 "C. When the Bi-2212 and (Sr,Ca)3A1206 solid-solution compositions were changed slightly, the tie-line relationship was not preserved, and a new phase was observed to form with composition -BiSrl.5Cao.5A120,.Composites of (0 to 24) volume fraction % Sr2CaAI2O6 + Bi2Sr2CaCu20Bts equilibrated at 860 "C slightly reduced the T, (by 2 K to 4 K) and superconducting volume percentage of the 2212 phase. The dielectric properties of (Sr = 1.0 to 2.5) members of solid-solution (Sr,Ca)3A1206 were measured at 77 K and 297 K in the range of (10 to 11) GHz for cylindrical samples using resonant system methods. The dielectric constant E, varied from 9.7 to 13.2, and the loss tangent tan 6 was from 3 x lo4 to 8 10'4. INTRODUCTION izSrzCaCuzOs+~ (Bi-2212) superconductors with T, I 95 B K are candidates for bulk and thin film applications such as power filters, microwave devices, and long length wires [l]. Bi-2212 conductors have achieved high J,s (> lo5 A/cmz at 5 K and > 2x104 A/cmz at 77 K) when processed by lower cost methods such as thick film coating on Ag [2] or Ni [3].
