Equilibrium phase relations in the Bi–Ca–Sr–Cu–O system at 850 and 900°C

Abstract: The phase relations of equilibrium compounds in the pseudoternary system Bi2O3–(Ca,Sr)O–CuO at 850 and 900°C were studied. The ratio of Ca : Sr was fixed at 1:2. Starting materials of Bi2O3, CaCO3, SrCO3, and CuO with various ratios were mixed, pressed into pellets, and heated at or above and then brought back to 850 or 900°C for different durations to ensure that equilibrium had been reached. The products were cooled in air or quenched in liquid nitrogen and then identified by x-ray powder diffraction. At 850… Show more

“…5 shows the XRD pattern for the C a l c i~t i~n s in flowing artificial air with 0.5 vol.% of CO,. Powders treated in air are mainly composed of Bi(2212) and second phases like Ca$b04, CuO and traces of Bi(2201) and a solid solution (named ssol) close to B i 3~S r 4 0 , [8]. XRD patterns in fig.…”

“…1. The Cu-free phase is most normally observed during processing of Bi2SrzCaCu208,s composition powders [27], and can only be eliminated (as shown in Fig. 1) by precise control of the heating temperatures and times during calcination and sintering.…”

“…Therefore, these samples were prepared again by solid state techniques. [25,27,28,29]. It should be noted that the measured compositional ranges of the secondary phases found with 2212 only partially define the solid solution region for each of these phases [22].…”

“…The 2212 and 2223 phases are the only compounds found so far that exist only as quaternary phases in this system [25,28,29]. The 2223 compound is difficult to produce as single-phase material without anneals close to the melting point, additions of Pb, and/or heat treatments under reduced oxygen partial pressures [30,31].…”
