Equilibrium and Kinetic Study of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) Adsorption onto Fabricated Polyethersulfone (PES)/Hydroxyapatite (HAP) Adsorptive Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM)

Abstract: In this study, different amount of hydroxyapatite (HAP) was embedded into polyethersulfone (PES) matrix to prepare adsorptive mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). All fabricated membranes were characterised based on functional groups, morphology, overall porosity, water content, hydrophilicity and pure water flux. The relationship of equilibrium and kinetics of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption onto fabricated membrane in a batch system was performed. The BSA adsorption equilibrium data is best described by Freu… Show more

“…The magnified image of the water droplet was then observed using a digital camera, and the CA readings were obtained at 10 s after the deposition of the water droplet on the surface of the dried membrane. The contact angles of each membrane at 5 different spots were recorded, and their mean values were calculated [ 39 ].…”

“…In all the membranes, the adsorption peaks characteristic to PES are observed at 710, 820, 1105, 1153, 1239, 1581, 1324, 1400, and 1477 cm −1 . These have been assigned to the CH 2 bond, CH stretching, CO stretching, SO stretching, aromatic ether stretching, benzene ring stretching, aromatic skeletal vibrations, and CH stretching, respectively 58–60 . The M1 blend spectra patterns appeared to be the same to those of M0 likely because of the similarity in some of chemical groups that make up their structures, with peaks between 1672 and 550 cm −1 possibly masking some characteristic peaks of PLA in that region.…”

[58][59][60] The M1 blend spectra patterns appeared to be the same to those of M0 likely because of the similarity in some of chemical groups that make up their structures, with peaks between 1672 and 550 cm À1 possibly masking some characteristic peaks of PLA in that region. Peaks at 1745, 1452, and 1080 cm À1 have been assigned to C O stretching, C H stretching, and C O C stretching of PLA respectively, while peaks between 3000 and 3600 cm À1 are indicative of O H stretch.…”

“…For pristine PES, the peaks that could characterize the samples can be observed at 1576 cm −1 (CC), 1484 cm −1 (CH 3 −C−CH 3 ), 1235 cm −1 (C−O−C bond), 1296 cm −1 (SO bond), and 1144 cm −1 (sulfone group in PES). 30,37 Apparently, the composite PES/ PDMS/ZIF-L membrane has a lower peak intensity than PES, indicating the presence of the selective layer on the PES support. The peaks at 795 and 1007 cm −1 in the PES/PDMS/ ZIF-L refer to Si−C stretching and Si−O−Si asymmetric stretching, respectively, due to the presence of PDMS.…”
