Equilibration of quantum Hall edge states by an Ohmic contact

Abstract: Ohmic contacts are crucial elements of electron optics that have not received a clear theoretical description yet. We propose a model of an Ohmic contact as a piece of metal of the finite capacitance C attached to a quantum Hall edge. It is shown that charged quantum Hall edge states may have weak coupling to neutral excitations in an Ohmic contact. Consequently, despite being a reservoir of neutral excitations, an Ohmic contact is not able to efficiently equilibrate edge states if its temperature is smaller t… Show more

“…The minimal model of the ν = 2 3 edge explains this contradiction in a natural way: the experimentally observed "charge" is a weight average of the charges of two equally relevant quasiparticles with weights defined by nonuniversal tunneling amplitudes' ratio θ . This gives an extra argument in favor of the minimal model of the ν = 2 3 edge with the K matrix (25). A similar point was made in paper [11] in relation to the experiment [9].…”

“…5 and 6). Recently there has been some theoretical progress in understanding of the interaction of Ohmic contacts with the quantum Hall edge [25]. However, at present a complete theoretical predictive model of Ohmic contacts is still missing, and the information on the neutral mode heating may contribute to its development.…”

“…Indeed, even if the level spacing in such systems is negligible, the charging energy may compare to the base temperature of the experiment and other characteristic energies. As a result, such an Ohmic contact cannot fully equilibrate edge electrons [6]. A related phenomenon of the Coulomb blockade of the heat flux has recently been observed in FIG.…”

“…However, as has been pointed out in the Ref. [6], in contrast to photons, electrons carry electrical charge, which has to be taken into account, if one considers an Ohmic contact from somewhat broader perspective as a metallic island strongly coupled to edge states [14,15]. Indeed, even if the level spacing in such systems is negligible, the charging energy may compare to the base temperature of the experiment and other characteristic energies.…”
