Equations of state of unreacted explosives: PETN, RDX, HMX, TATB

Abstract: Abstract. For most of explosive conversion kinetics simulations associated with the analysis of HE initiation, safety of HE handling, accidents, etc., one needs to know the equation of state of yet unreacted ("cold") HE. Acquisition of experimental data for such materials poses a real challenge, such data are rather scarce, and their accuracy does not allow plotting continuous curves at all times. In this case, computational, theoretical and semi-empirical approaches that involve a limited number of available … Show more

“…The aforementioned formulas for EOS of mixture reduces to the EOS of pure mixture components. EOS parameters for pure HE and their DP are given in Table 1 based on data [7], [8]. These EOS quite reasonably describe available shock-wave and detonation data.…”

“…Nadykto proposed that a compression-induced change in the electronic structure of PETN gives rise to a change in the gradient of the isotherm and Hugoniot at about 4.15 GPa. 34 The response of PETN to compression was modeled using different equations of state for conditions above and below the transition. However, the complete, free energy based equation of state developed in this work and the incomplete equations of state developed in refs 35 and 36 demonstrate that the isotherm and Hugoniot of single crystal PETN can be described adequately by assuming a single phase.…”

“…Much attention has been given to the shock Hugoniot relation (or EoS) of unreacted insensitive explosives in the long-term study [5,6]. Earlier, the Hugoniot relations for unreacted explosives were often obtained by the inconvenient wedge experiment [7].…”
