EPUAP classification system for pressure ulcers: European reliability study

Abstract: Inter-observer reliability of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classification system was low. Evaluation thus needs to focus on both the clarity and complexity of the system. Definitions and unambiguous descriptions of pressure ulcer grades and the distinction between moisture lesions will probably enhance clarity. To simplify the current classification system, a reduction in the number of grades is suggested.

“…Moreover, using photos instead of examining the patient has an impact on expert performance [14]. When several experts are consulted, it appears that inter-observer variability is important, exceeding intra-observer variability [5]. For classification purposes, several region descriptors have been widely tested on wound tissue samples.…”

“…18 When several experts are consulted, it appears that interobserver variability is important, exceeding intraobserver variability. 19 For classification purposes, several region descriptors have been widely tested on wound tissue samples. Color histograms are typical of such statistical data gathering as tissue descriptors, 12,20 but it has been proved that tissues could still not be classified robustly in a large collection of images.…”

“…The abstract nature of attitude related barriers make them more difficult to overcome than knowledge related barriers, and changing a nurse's attitude often takes much longer than changing a nurse's level of education on NSOs. While attitude related barriers may prove more challenging than other barriers, they have a large impact on clinical outcomes, such as ventilation associated pneumonia, pressure ulcers and central line infections (Beeckman et al., 2007; Soh, Davidson, Leslie, DiGiacomo & Soh, 2013). In line with Baker et al.…”
