Epstein‐Barr virus in exfoliated cells from the postnasal space

Abstract: There is a high incidence of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NCP) in certain populations, including Greenland Eskimos. The cancer appears to have a causal association with Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV), which is regularly found in NPC epithelial cells. “…Tungwood et al 33 detected EBV‐specific RNA in biopsies from normal nasopharynx in all 18 subjects they tested. Hoerding et al 34 found EBV DNA in nasopharynx biopsies of 35% (6/17) of healthy Danes and in 81% (44/55) of nondiseased Greenland Eskimos. They concluded that EBV infection leads to a chronic carrier state in the nasopharynx.…”
