Epstein–Barr virus-associated lymphomas

Abstract: Following Epstein and colleagues' ground-breaking discovery of Epstein-Barr virus by electron microscopy of Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines, there came the observation that Epstein-Barr virus induces immortalization of B cells in vitro. Thus, initial hopes were of a virus confined to equatorial Africa with a causal link to a particular subtype of childhood lymphoma. Over the past 40 years there has been great progress towards understanding the biology and epidemiology of Epstein-Barr virus, which conclusively sh… Show more

“…In this study, we found that PTLDs significantly occur in females; however, when we re-analyzed the data using time-dependent methods and after adjustment for other risk factors, we found no additional risk of developing PTLDs in females (Table 1). Moreover, using bivariate analyses and corroborating to a fair number of studies [6,7], we found that compared to non-PTLD patients, patients in the PTLD group had significantly lower age, although several other authors reported contrasting findings with a higher incidence of PTLD among older patients [12][13][14][15][16]. However, proportional hazard analysis after adjustment for other risk factors showed that age is not an independent contributing factor in developing PTLD ( Table 1).…”

“…It is unclear whether T-cell responses are required to be antigen-specific or can, at least in part, mediate their effector activity through a non-specific bystander effect via local antitumor cytokine production. Our findings provide interesting insights into a sub-group of DLBCL associated with high levels of EBV expression within the tumor (33). EBV þ DLBCL has poor outcome (22).…”

“…EBV is associated with certain cancers, in particular with endemic nasopharyngeal cancer in Asia and Burkitt's lymphoma in Africa. 5 Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG) is a DNA repair enzyme and, together with the 5′-triphosphate pyrophosphatase (dUTPase), it keeps the genome free of uracil bases. dUTPase maintains a low dUTP/dTTP ratio, whereas UNG removes uracil from the DNA.…”
