Epoxy resin cure. II. FTIR analysis

Abstract: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is used to determine the cure rate of an epoxy resin consisting of Tetraglycidyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) and diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS). Cure rates at 120 and 160°C are shown to increase noticeably when 1% BF3–MEA is added to either TGDDM to TGDDM plus DDS. Fluoroboric acid is shown to increase the cure rates even more than the BF3–MEA. These Results combined with the NMR results in the accompanying article indicate that BF3–MEA is not a catalyst fo… Show more

“…This causes the need for an internal reference band 20 and therefore many researchers 19,24,[28][29][30][31] have started using a band associated with a component that remains constant during the curing process as an internal reference peak. Most commonly, aromatic ring absorption peaks are taken to normalise the epoxy and amine peaks as aromatic rings do not participate in polymerization or crosslinking process 11,16 . hence an updated version of Eqn.…”

“…Different researchers use different peaks for this calculation. which is assigned to C -O stretching vibration in the oxirane ring 5, 11,17,20,21,24 . One example from this category of study is Fraga 26 shows the epoxy conversion calculated using peak 915 cm -1 normalised with the peak 1510 cm -1 which is assigned to phenyl group and also effectively used by other researchers 11,21,26 .…”

“…The initiator selected was a boron trifluoride monoethylamine (BF 3 ·MEA) complex, which is known to be an efficient initiator for the homopolymerisation of epoxy resins [35][36][37]. The BF 3 ·MEA and MMT were mixed together in various proportions (to give 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% for BF 3 ·MEA, and 2 wt% and 5 wt% for MMT, both with respect to TGAP) using acetone as a solvent, which was subsequently removed.…”
