In this study, an analysis of the influence of polymer modification on the mechanical behavior, porosity, and microstructure of mortar is carried out. Epoxy latexes contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of cement were employed in the preparation of cement mortars based on the same workability. The specimens were subjected to dry, wet, and wet–dry curing regimes. Compressive strength, flexural strength, Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) tests were conducted to analyze the effect of epoxy latexes on the mechanical property and porosity of modified mortars. Based on the compressive strength test results, a quantitative method was established to calculated the degree of hydration and polymerization. The results show that the mechanical behavior and porosity property of epoxy latexes modified mortar are influenced by the degree of hydration, the degree of polymerization, and the volume changing effect of mortar. The polymerization of epoxy latexes could improve the flexural strength of the mortar. The macropores of specimens tended to decrease with the increase of the degree of epoxy latexes polymerization and cement hydration. In practical engineering, it is necessary to ensure the degree of hydration and increase the polymerization rate. Thus, the wet–dry curing regime is recommended.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal propor um procedimento padrão para a utilização do método colorimétrico para medir a profundidade de penetração de cloretos nas inspeções de estruturas de concreto em que existe a exposição aos cloretos e à carbonatação simultaneamente. Para evitar a ocorrência de resultados "falsos positivos" foram testadas as soluções de hidróxido de cálcio (Ca(OH)₂) e hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) como tratamento prévio. Os testes foram conduzidos em amostras apenas carbonatadas e em amostras contaminadas por cloretos e carbonatadas. Os resultados mostram que a solução de NaOH elimina a interferência da carbonatação. Desse modo, chegou-se a indicação de um método adequado para introdução de leituras de profundidade de contaminação por cloretos nas inspeções do concreto em campo.

This paper presents a review on rubberized concrete mixes and their properties such as strength, ductility, sound and water absorption, in addition to acid and sulphate resistance. Moreover, it discusses a review about using rubberized concrete in structural elements and its effect on ultimate compressive strength and ductility. Rubberized concrete mixes exhibit lower strength than ordinary concrete mixes. On the other hand, rubberized concrete has higher ductility and energy dissipation behaviour. Rubberized concrete with its lightweight showed a high resistance to freeze-thaw and sulphate and acid attacks in comparison with ordinary concrete. The most common structural member is Rubberized Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (RUCFST). In addition to the aforementioned merits of rubberized concrete, the confining effect of the steel tube recoups the reduction in concrete compressive strength caused by rubber inclusion. Limited researches concerned in strengthening and repairing of deficient Concrete Filled Steel Tubes (CFST) with different types of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP). There is noticeable effect of using these FRP materials on RUCFST sections, ultimate strength and ductility.
