Epoxidized vegetable oils as processing aids and activators in carbon-black filled natural rubber compounds

Abstract: This study investigated the suitability of epoxidized vegetable oils as additives in place of aromatic processing aids and activators in natural rubber based truck tyre tread compounds. The processability and cure characteristics of the compounds and physical properties of the vulcanizates were compared with those of the standard vulcanizate, which was prepared with a standard mineral oil-Dutrex R. Epoxidation of the oils was carried out (formed in situ) using the peracetic acid method and epoxidation was conf… Show more

“…However, the ban is not fully enforced to date since effective alternatives are not available in the market. [1] Vegetable oils are environmentally friendly, biodegradable, less costly and readily available. The use of these oils in many applications has attracted the attention of many researchers due to their potential as substitutes to petrochemical derivatives.…”

“…The curing properties based on t 40 (scorch time) Materials AO TDAE PO EPO SBR 100 100 100 100 Carbon black 50 50 50 50 Stearic acid 1 1 International Journal of Polymer Science and t 90 (cure time) of different oil-filled elastomer are shown in Figure 1(b). The scorch and cure times of the elastomer composites with PO and EPO are shorter than those of other elastomer composites, because the epoxy group is able to form active vulcanizing agents [20] in Figure 1(b). A comparison of torque in the elastomer composites with different oils is showed in Figure 1(c).…”

“…Menurut Chandrasekara et al (2011) expoxidized palm oil (EPO), dan epoxidized sunflower oil (ESFO) sebagai bahan pelunak lebih baik dari minyak aromatik berbasis minyak bumi. Penggunaan minyak nabati sebagai peptizer untuk menurunkan viskositas karet agar mudah menerima ingredient sehingga bahan yang ditambahkan dapat terdispersi dengan merata pada seluruh matriks polimer.…”
