Epizootic of Tularemia in an Outdoor Housed Group of Cynomolgus Monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)

Abstract: Abstract. Tularemia is a highly contagious infectious zoonosis, transmissible by inoculation, ingestion, or inhalation of the infectious agent Francisella tularensis. The disease is perpetuated by infected rodents, blood-sucking arthropods, and by contaminated water. Therefore, nonhuman primates housed outdoors may be at risk for exposure. An epizootic of F. tularensis occurred in an indoor/ outdoor-housed group of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) at the German Primate Center. Tularemia was diagnosed i… Show more

“…Seroconversion from a negative to a positive rapid test result was also confirmed in five monkeys after they were naturally exposed to F. tularensis between 2003 and 2005 (18). Similar results were obtained from three rabbits and two pigs, which had been immunized with either F. tularensis subsp.…”

“…In addition, 44 sera obtained from two different nonhuman primate species (Macaca mulatta and M. fascicularis) recently exposed to F. tularensis subsp. holarctica (18) were analyzed. We also tested preand postimmunization sera (n ϭ 8) from four pigs that were vaccinated with inactivated bacterial cells from F. tularensis subsp.…”

“…Tularemia is serious and often fatal. Outbreaks of naturally acquired tularemia have also been described in nonhuman primates, including macaques (Matz-Rensing et al 2007). Rhesus macaques exposed to aerosol particles of F. tularensis develop the fullblown pneumonic form of tularemia, which is often fatal (Schricker et al 1972).…”

“…Outbreaks of the disease in NHPs are fairly uncommon. 11,27 This case was one of a cluster of cases of tularemia diagnosed at the California National Primate Research Center in animals housed in the outdoor corn cribs in the fall of 2010. 11 Seven cases in total came to pathology, while several other animals were successfully treated.…”
