“…Our indications for the conservative procedures in 26 operations were: Absolute: Renal insufficiency (17) Solitary kidney (5) Bilateral tumours (7) Relative: Small tumour with a narrow pedicle. Ferris and Daut (1948) were the first-in 1941-to perform a renal conserving operation in a case of a renal pelvis tumour and Vest (1945) was the first to perform such an operation in a case of a ureteral tumour. In 1957 we reported conservation of the kidney in 5 cases of ureteral turnours.…”

[1][2][3] However, a universally accepted form of treatment has not been developed. 4,5 Therefore, we think that treatment should be selected taking into consideration the grade, filtration and stage of the tumor and conservative surgery needs to be restricted to patients with a single, low grade, non-invasive papillary tumor.…”

“…Solitary kidneys (functional or anatomical), bilateral synchronous tumours and renal insufficiency not infrequently preclude a nephrectomy. Several authors have shown long recurrence‐free periods or cure with conservative surgery [ 4–8]. Evidence against adopting this approach in the presence of a normal contralateral kidney includes the multifocality of ipsilateral tumours in up to a third of patients [ 9] compared with the low incidence of contralateral tumours, and a high incidence of ureteric stump recurrences.…”
