Epithelioma cuniculatum a variety of squamous carcinoma peculiar to the foot

Abstract: WE have seen three examples of a tumour of the foot which does not appear to be described in the literature. Probably, as we shall see, it is no more than a carcinoma of the skin. But two at least of our cases (One we Only know as a specimen) caused both clinicians and pathologists concerned considerable difficulty in diagnosis and treatment, and we and characteristically sickly smell of sebum oozed out of these sinuses like toothpaste from a tube. The mass extended right through the foot, and appeared on the … Show more

“…Prior to the coining of the term carcinoma cuniculatum, in 1954 Aird et al [1] labeled this tumor as ''epithelioma cuniculatum'' and described the salient histopathologic features, namely numerous, complex, deeply invading crypts and sinuses composed of well differentiated keratinizing squamous epithelium imparting a resemblance to the burrows of rabbit's nests. The terms Buschke-Lowenstein tumor and inverted VC have also been used by some investigators [8].…”

“…Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC) is a rare, well differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma first described by Aird et al [1] on the sole of the foot, though known to occur at other sites even at the time of this initial description. Cuniculatum, derived from the Latin, references the deep, complex pattern of invasion by keratinizing squamous epithelium lined channels resembling rabbit burrows.…”
