Epithelioid Hemangioma of Lingual Alveolar Mucosa: An Immunohistochemical Case Report

Abstract: Epithelioid hemangioma is a rare benign vascular lesion that presents as a nodular lesion in the skin of head and neck region. It is a superficial vascular entity which can either be due to tumor or reactive lesion, but the exact etiology is still unknown. We hereby present a rare case which has been reported with the history of small nodular-like growth on mandibular buccal and lingual area. The excisional biopsy was performed and tissue was submitted for histopathological diagnosis. The immunohistochemistry … Show more

“…KD occurs in younger male patients with systemic disease (nephrotic syndrome, peripheral eosinophilia, high IgE level) and lymphadenopathies. 5,13,15,22,26,29-40 Unlike KD, peripheral blood eosinophilia is not a constant finding in ALHE/EH, although it can appear, as in the present case. Although both entities can reveal clinical overlapping, the histopathological features are very useful to accurately distinguish between the 2.…”

“…In epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, the endothelial cells show intracytoplasmic lumens with a hyalinized stroma. 17-19,24,25,31 Although hematoxylin/eosin histological observation remains the most appropriate method for vascular tumor diagnosis, proliferation index (Ki-67), and molecular studies can also be useful for differential diagnosis between EH and malignant vascular neoplasms. A chromosomal translocation has recently been described in both conventional epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, resulting in WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion, and in the less common variant with vasoformative features showing YAP1-TFE3 fusion.…”

“…The behavior of lesions differ and show a range; from asymptomatic bumps to pruritic and painful swellings (6). Lesions are occasionally reported in different parts with the orbital tissues, parotid, chest and lingual mucosa being some of the areas presented (4,7,8,9). Orbital involvement of ALHE is very rarely bilateral and is generally treated with surgery.…”

“…2 Histopathologically, ALHE is characterized by well-formed vessels, which are frequently immature, delineated by an endothelium of epithelioid cells associated with an abundant chronic inflammatory infiltrate. 3 Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia can involve any part of the head and neck, including maxillary bones, salivary glands, muscle tissues, and the skin. The oral mucosa is an uncommon target and there are few reports in the literature, but, when it is involved, the sites affected most often are the lips, the buccal mucosa, and the tongue.…”
