Epithelial Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Nasal Cavity: Clinical, Histopathological, and Immunohistochemical Distinction of a Case Report

Abstract: Different variants of EMCs exist, such as oncocytic EMC. EMCs should be treated aggressively because they can be locally invasive, recur, and give rise to distant metastases.

“…However, such data are more applicable to classic quiescent EMC than higher grade or RT-associated EMC. RT has been included in treatment plans since WHO inclusion in 1991, and some authors advocate for a refined incorporation of adjuvant RT in the setting of recurrent or high risk EMC[22,23]. Metastatic cases, while uncommon, have a poor prognosis when observed without chemoradiotherapy[24].…”

“…Of all the types of nasopharyngeal malignancies treated at our center, the incidence of EMCa is 1/315 (0.3%) as of 2021. This tumor can occur in unusual sites, such as the breast (13)(14)(15), pituitary gland (16), paranasal sinus (9,17,18), lacrimal gland (19)(20)(21)(22), nasal cavity (1,3,6,(23)(24)(25), trachea and bronchus (26,27), lung (28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34), nasopharynx (4,5), and even the pleura mediastinalis (35). EMCa was first reported by Donath in 1972, and 8 patients have been reported with a salivary gland tumor that was termed EMCa (36).…”

“…Epithelial-Myoepthial Carcinoma (EMC) is locally aggressive, lowgrade tumor of duct -like structures composed of two cell type: small, inner duct lining cells and larger, peripheral myoepithelial cells.it represent 1% of all salivary gland neoplasm and over 75% occur in the parotid gland. Epithelial-myoepthial carcinoma EMC is histopathological term used to describe the biphasic pattern of clear staining of the myoepithelial cells surrounding variable proportions of the ducts with an epithelial lining [1]. EMC is a rare neoplasm, first described in 1972 by Donath et al [7].…”
