Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma: a population-based survival analysis

Abstract: BackgroundEpithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm seen most frequently in the salivary glands, representing approximately 1 to 2% of salivary gland tumors. Less than 600 cases have been reported in the literature since its initial description in 1972. The aim of this study was to examine demographic, site, stage, and survival factors in patients with epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma.MethodsThe 1973–2014 SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) cancer database was querie… Show more

“…EMC arise most commonly in the parotid (75%) and submandibular gland (10%–12%) . Other sites include minor salivary glands, oral cavity, upper and lower airways, lung, breast, skin, soft tissue and gynecological tract . Sublingual and lacrimal glands are exceptional locations .…”

“…More specifically, the inner layer of ductal-lining exhibits characteristics of epithelial-type cells while the outer layer exhibits characteristics of clear, myoepithelial type cells. In this tumor, local recurrence rates is ranging from 23% to 80%, an incidence of metastasis is reported to be about 14% and a death rate is reported to be as high as 40% in literature [9]. BCAC has characteristics of basaloid cell proliferation similar to basal cell adenoma (BCA), but is different from BCA in that it exhibits necrosis or mitoses, as well as invasive activity such as capsular invasion.…”

“…A large study by Mitchell Gore analyzing 468 cases of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma between 1973-2014 provided valuable population-based survival analysis [5]. These data included mean survival rate of epithelialmyoepithelial carcinoma (Table 1), most common sites of occurance of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (Table 2), epithlial-myoepithelial carcinoma occurrence by sex (Table 3), and epithelial-myoepithelial occurrence by race (Table 4).…”
