Epithelial apical glycosylation changes associated with thin endometrium in women with infertility - a pilot observational study

Abstract: Background Low endometrial receptivity is one of the major factors affecting successful implantation in assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Infertile patients with thin endometrium have a significantly lower cumulative clinical pregnancy rate than patients with normal endometrium. Molecular pathophysiology of low receptivity of thin endometrium remains understudied. We have investigated composition of glycocalyx of the apical surface of luminal and glandular epithelial cells in thin endom… Show more

“…In this review, we focused on glycan recognition by peripheral NK cells and modulation of activation toward the cytotoxic phenotype to uncover new insights into molecular communication mechanisms between the trophoblast and the peripheral innate immune system. In the last two decades, a glycobiological perspective on pregnancy has emerged ( 32 35 ), and these new approaches have the potential to provide critical insights into the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and the development of severe clinical forms of the disease ( 36 43 ).…”

“…Over the years, a number of hypotheses have been proposed regarding the pathogenesis of thin endometrium, including increased cellular senescence, excessive collagen deposition and downregulation of gene expression, based on thin uterine disease models ( Ziganshina et al, 2021 ; Lv et al, 2022 ). Therefore, a variety of therapeutically suggested therapies have been created to target these pathogenic pathways.…”

“…An example of such an environmental modulation is that in certain hostile conditions that alpacas are exposed, these animals mobilize their own micronutrients like selenium to support the survival of the conceptus. This transplacental nutrient transportation is highly influenced by the glycosylation pattern, once a modification in this profile may compromise the maternal–fetal communication ( Ziganshina et al, 2021 ).…”
