Epitaxial thin-film growth of Ruddlesden–Popper-type Ba3Zr2O7 from a BaZrO3 target by pulsed laser deposition

Abstract: Ruddlesden-Popper Ba 3 Zr 2 O 7 thin films have been synthesized via pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The optimization of deposition parameters in PLD enables the formation of thin film of metastable Ba 3 Zr 2 O 7 phase from BaZrO 3 target. In order to see the post-annealing effects on the structural and optical properties, the deposited Ba 3 Zr 2 O 7 thin films were annealed at 500, 600 and 800°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals the formation of Ba 3 Zr 2 O 7 phase with tetragonal structure. The chang… Show more

“…9(b). The separation between the peak Ba 3d5/2 and Ba 3d3/2 states representing the binding energy 15.3 eV confirms that the valence state of barium is in Ba 2+ state [40,41]. Fig.9(c) shows the core level splitting of the Sn3d spectrum having the spin-orbital splitting, for the Sn (3d) state with 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 states having doublet peaks with binding energy values 485.4 eV and 493.8 eV respectively with a peak separation of 8.4 eV.…”

“…The Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) compounds belonging to the A nþ1 B n O 3nþ1 (n ¼ 1, 2, 3, 1) general formula consist of 'n' perovskite blocks separated into rock-salt layers and compressed between these layers. These compounds have a wide range of electrical behavior as well as from high dielectric constant paraelectric to superconductor, due to their wide forbidden energy gaps [1][2][3][4][5]. A nþ1 B n O 3nþ1 compounds transition from cubic (n¼1) to tetragonal or orthorhombic (n ¼ 1, 2, 3) phases when the length of the A-O and/or B-O bonds is changed.…”

Due to its unusual physical properties, the these perovskite compounds have many application areas, such as capacitors, transistor, dielectric resonator, infrared detectors [2,6,7].…”
