Epitaxial Electrodeposition of Nickel on Pt(111) Electrode

Abstract: Artificial nickel thin films, potentially useful as magnetic materials and electrocatalysts, have been prepared by electrodeposition on noble transition metal electrodes. This study employed scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and cyclic voltammetry to study electrodeposition of Ni on Pt(111) from 0.1 M KClO 4 + 1 mM HCl + 0.06 M NiCl 2 . Deposition of Ni was noted at potentials more positive than its Nernst potential, as proton discharge and hydrogen evolution occurred concomitantly. Bulk deposition of Ni com… Show more

“…3k and l reveal a long-range modulation of atomic heights in the first five layers of Co. This moire structure is similar to those observed with Ni on Pt(1 1 1) [33], and Co deposited on Pt(1 1 1) and Au(1 1 1) [16,21]. The present Co/Pt(1 1 1) moire pattern is modeled accordingly as a layer of hexagonal Co array stacked on the Pt(1 1 1) plane, which inevitably results in varying coordination sites for Co adatoms from 3-fold hollow to atop sites on the Pt(1 1 1) substrate.…”

“…Also, the smaller periodicity suggests a reduction of Co lattice parameter, as also noted with Co deposition on Pt(1 1 1) in vacuum [16]. Furthermore, ultrathin film of Ni electrodeposited on Pt(11 1) exhibits the same structural changes [33]. Similar moire structures have been observed in many heteroepitaxial deposition systems [21,39,40].…”

“…This result has been observed with heteroatom deposition, such as with cobalt and nickel on Au(111) and Pt(111) electrodes. [40][41][42] A few islands highlighted by dotted circles in Figure 6a are ascribed to aggregated gold atoms released from the Au(111) surface when its atomic structure was changed from the reconstructed to the (1 × 1) state. 43 Figure 6b shows a higher-resolution STM scan obtained at 0.1 V, in which the Pt deposit is covered with H atoms.…”
