Vascular epiphytes stand out in tropical forests in terms of diversity. However, no comprehensive review of the group in the Amazon region has been performed so far. We carried out a literature review on the scientific knowledge of vascular epiphytes in the Amazon aiming to identify the main gaps, limitations and perspectives for studies on the subject. Searches were conducted in Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science using inclusion and exclusion criteria. 291 articles published in the period 1933-2022, mostly the 21st century, were included in the review. Brazil was the most studied country. However, knowledge gaps were found in regions located in the Brazilian arc of deforestation as well as in areas of Bolivia, Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname. There was a predominance of studies related to the floristics, systematics and biogeography of spermatophytes and ferns, focusing on the diversity and taxonomy of certain families (e.g. Orchidaceae). However, we found gaps for more comprehensive research, considering population dynamics, dominance (biomass), guidelines for evaluation of epiphyte and systematization of data for Amazon. We indicate the need of studies focused on ecology, floral and reproductive biology, biochemistry, phytochemistry, anatomy and physiology. Future research should also consider the impacts of current trends in deforestation and climatic changes on the diversity of vascular epiphytes in the Amazon.

The seaweed industry is strategically important in Indonesia, comprising over 40% of the nation's aquaculture annual production. Despite the industry's promising growth, various challenges and problems remain, including intense epiphyte infestation. Hence, investigating the economic value of these epiphytes could provide new opportunities for potential industrial applications. Epiphytic algae is commonly found growing on commercial seaweeds which causes decreased biomass and increased risk of crop failure. Information regarding these epiphytic algae remains limited. This study investigates the molecular identification of the abundant epiphytic macroalgae found in one of the largest seaweed farms in, Seriwe Bay, Lombok, Indonesia. In addition, the epiphytic bioactive activity is also evaluated for further industrial potential. Molecular identification with the mitochondrial marker COX1 identifies the epiphytic macroalgae as Gracilaria edulis (S.G.Gmel.) P.C.Silva. The Indonesian G. edulis is closely related to the G. edulis specimens from Malaysia (JQ026083.1), Philippines (KY995636.1 and KY995635.1), and Thailand (JQ026088.1). The outgroup used was the G. edulis specimen from India (KP099563.1) because it shows the most distinct relationship to the other specimens. Extracted agar of Seriwe G. edulis shows moderate yield (21%) and low gel strength (134 g/cm2). The phytochemical content analyses show that G. edulis agar has a TPC value of 3.65 ± 0.52 mg GAE/g and promising antioxidant activity (DPPH IC50 = 797.40 ± 1.50 µg/mL; ABTS IC50 = 558.40 ± 1.44 µg/mL). Further phytochemical profiling with GCMS shows various promising major constituents such as tetradecanoic acid, neophyte diene, pentadecanoic acid, and hexadecanoic acid. Therefore, the findings suggest that G. edulis displays potential applications in the functional food and cosmetic industry.

Diferentes métricas de biodiversidad se deben explorar para evaluar de manera más eficiente los cambios observados en las comunidades. Sin embargo, el desempeño de distintas métricas de biodiversidad no ha sido explorado en el golfo de Batabanó, lo que puede dificultar la selección de índices adecuados para el monitoreo ambiental. Para solventar esta problemática seis métricas de biodiversidad (riqueza de especies, equidad de Pielou, diversidad de Shannon, diversidad taxonómica, distintividad taxonómica promedio y variación en la distintividad taxonómica) fueron comparadas para determinar su congruencia y respuestas ante variables abióticas (salinidad, temperatura, turbidez, profundidad) y factores (zonas y años). Los resultados obtenidos por correlaciones entre las métricas y sus respuestas a las variables abióticas y factores analizados mostraron complementariedad entre la riqueza de especies, equidad de Pielou, diversidad de Shannon, distintividad taxonómica promedio y variación en la distintividad taxonómica, no siendo así para la diversidad taxonómica. Según los resultados de este trabajo, se sugiere el uso de la riqueza de especies y las métricas de distintividad taxonómica ∆+ y Λ+ para evaluar la calidad ambiental del golfo de Batabanó. Además se deben evaluar sus desempeños en otros grupos de organismos.
