Object. Surgical interventions for medically refractory epilepsy are effective in selected patients, but they are underutilized. There remains a lack of pooled data on complication rates and their changes over a period of multiple decades. The authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of reported complications from intracranial epilepsy surgery from 1980 to 2012.Methods. A literature search was performed to find articles published between 1980 and 2012 that contained at least 2 patients. Patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the procedure they underwent: A) temporal lobectomy with or without amygdalohippocampectomy, B) extratemporal lobar or multilobar resections, or C) invasive electrode placement. Articles were divided into 2 time periods, 1980-1995 and 1996-2012.Results. Sixty-one articles with a total of 5623 patients met the study's eligibility criteria. Based on the 2 time periods, neurological deficits decreased dramatically from 41.8% to 5.2% in Group A and from 30.2% to 19.5% in Group B. Persistent neurological deficits in these 2 groups decreased from 9.7% to 0.8% and from 9.0% to 3.2%, respectively. Wound infections/meningitis decreased from 2.5% to 1.1% in Group A and from 5.3% to 1.9% in Group B. Persistent neurological deficits were uncommon in Group C, although wound infections/meningitis and hemorrhage/hematoma increased over time from 2.3% to 4.3% and from 1.9% to 4.2%, respectively. These complication rates are additive in patients undergoing implantation followed by resection.Conclusions. Complication rates have decreased dramatically over the last 30 years, particularly for temporal lobectomy, but they remain an unavoidable consequence of epilepsy surgery. Permanent neurological deficits are rare following epilepsy surgery compared with the long-term risks of intractable epilepsy.

AbstractÖz Purpose: In this study we aimed to explore the knowledge, attitude and behaviors of primary school teachers about childhood epilepsy disease and contribute to pretentive public health policies. Material and Methods: In our study 463 primary school teachers at the center of Kahramanmaras province were included between 02.11.2015 to 07.12.2015. Questionnaires were administered to teachers giving informed consent for childhood epilepsy containing questions about their knowledge, attitude and behaviors. Participants' level of knowledge about epilepsy was assessed over total 29 points. Results: Of all teachers, 62.2% determined that they have faced with a child undergoing epileptic seizures. While teachers' level of knowledge about childhood epilepsy average score 14.34 was found, male teachers of epilepsy knowledge score was 14.4±4.6 and female teachers of epilepsy knowledge score was 14.2±4.0. Knowledge about epilepsy was similar in male and female teachers. When asked to teachers for epilepsy causes, of 263 (56.8%) brain disease, 236 (51%) genetic causes and 153 (33%) head trauma was revealed. 367 (%79,3) of participants involuntary contractions in the body, 366 (%79) fainting, and 325 (%70.2) stated that epilepsy is a symptom of loss of consciousness. Conclusion: In our study primary school teachers have insufficient knowledge of epilepsy according to the points we questioned. In addition we detected serious misbehaviors of teachers about childhood epilepsy. It is of great importance to train teachers about childhood epilepsy and epileptic seizures to be taken effective measures for protection of biological, social and psyshicological health of children.Amaç: Bu çalışmada ilkokul öğretmenlerinin çocukluk çağı epilepsi hastalığı konusunda bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarının belirlenerek koruyucu halk sağlığı politikalarına katkı sağlanması amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmamıza 02.11.2015 -07.12.2015 tarihleri arasında Kahramanmaraş il merkezinde görevli 463 ilkokul öğretmeni dahil edildi. Bilgilendirilmiş onam veren öğretmenlere çocukluk çağı epilepsilerine yönelik bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarının sorgulandığı anket uygulandı. Katılımcıların epilepsi konusunda bilgi düzeyleri toplam 29 puan üzerinden değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Öğretmenlerin %62.2'sinin daha önce epileptik kriz geçirmekte olan bir çocukla karşılaştığı belirlendi. Öğretmenlerin çocukluk çağı epilepsileri konusunda bilgi düzeyi puan ortalaması 14.34 iken, erkek öğretmenlerin bilgi puanı 14.4±4.6 ve kadın öğretmenlerin bilgi puanı ise 14.2±4.0 olarak saptandı. Kadın ve erkek öğretmenlerin epilepsi konusunda bilgi düzeyi benzerdi. Epilepsi hastalığı sebepleri sorgulandığında öğretmenlerin sırasıyla 263'ü (%56.8) beyin hastalığı, 236'sı (%51) genetik nedenler ve 153'ü (%33) kafa travmasını neden olarak belirtti.
