Epilepsy in Sardinia, Insular Italy: A Population-Based Prevalence Study

Abstract: Background: Sardinia, insular Italy, represents a particular epidemiological setting to investigate polyfactorial diseases, by virtue of its phylogeny and geographic isolation over time and of a well-established network of health operators and information systems. We present the first prevalence study of epilepsy conducted on a large Sardinian population by means of multiple source ascertainment. Methods: Cases were ascertained in the province of Sassari (population of 333,576) for the period between January 1… Show more

“…Our findings are in keeping with European and North American reports [17,18]. Prevalence ranged from 3.1 to 6.6 per 1,000 in other Italian studies [1,2,3,4,5,19]. The different methods for case ascertainment may explain some differences; our highest prevalence may be also due to the inclusion of subjects in remission or currently untreated but still followed for regular checks.…”

“…Published reports on the prevalence and incidence of epilepsy in Italy are few and, with one exception [1], are based on small samples [2,3], treated patients [4,] or children and adolescents [5]. Registries and databases in well-defined populations are useful instruments for the collection of data to be used for epidemiological purposes and to monitor drug prescriptions and drug safety.…”

“…The standardized prevalence of epilepsy was 4.30 per 1,000. Prevalence ranged from 3.13 to 6.62 per 1,000 in other Italian reports . The different methods for case ascertainment and the use of period rather than point prevalence may explain some differences.…”

“…However, investigation of multiple sources is time‐consuming, frequently expensive, and depends on the collaboration of doctors, patients, and health care administrators. Published reports on the prevalence and incidence of epilepsy in Italy are therefore few and, with one exception, are based on small samples or selected subgroups of the general population …”

“…Cinsiyete bağlı prevalans farklılıkları belirgin olmamakla beraber bazı çalışmalarda dikkati çekmektedir. [13][14][15][16] Birçok çalışmada, erkeklerde epilepsi görülme sıklığı, kadınlardan 1,1-1,4 kat daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Ülkemizde yapılan bir çalışmada ise, epilepsi prevalansı kadınlarda 4,5/1000, erkeklerde 7/1000 tespit edilmiştir.…”
