Epilepsy and COVID-19: Recent Findings and Considerations

Abstract

As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak enters its third year, it continues to impact social life and medical practice. Although respiratory symptoms are the most important clinical manifestations of COVID-19, COVID-19 can also cause various neurologic manifestations and disorders through neurotropism and collateral injuries. The effects of COVID-19 on seizures and epilepsy have been studied. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to changes in epilepsy care. In addition, concerns regarding the effectiveness and safety of the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with epilepsy are increasing. Epileptologists need to keep up with daily updates in the evidence regarding interactions between COVID-19 and epilepsy.
