Epilepsy: A Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: Epilepsy, a disorder of unprovoked seizures is a multifaceted disease affecting individuals of all ages with a particular predilection for the very young and old. In addition to seizures, many patients often report cognitive and psychiatric problems associated with both the seizures themselves and its therapy. Epilepsy has numerous etiologies both idiopathic and acquired with a wide range of therapeutic responses. Despite numerous treatments available to control repetitive seizures including medications, diets… Show more

“…Regarding to the kind of seizures, there was no critical distinction between the two groups (60% in group 1 and 56% in group 2). This result was in agreement with the view of Joseph I, 2015 who mentioned that the kind and distribution of seizure precipitating factors are more or less similar in patients with different epilepsy subtypes [19].…”

“…As per the International League Against Epilepsy, the occurrence of SE is either due to the failure in the mechanisms responsible for seizure termination or due to the initiation of mechanisms which leads to abnormal prolonged seizures (Trinka et al, ). SE leads to the long‐term effect, including neuronal death injury which is unavoidable as well single it can also decrease 10–25% reasoning and mental function of patients (Sirven, ). As per studies on clinical level, SE is a neurological disorder related to seizures which corresponds to imaging changes, like high T2WI signals, and degeneration of brain cell (Ribeiro et al, ; Wen, Yablonskiy, Salter, & Cross, ).…”
