Epigenetics: the first 25 centuries

Abstract: One contribution of 18 to a discussion meeting issue 'Frontiers in epigenetic chemical biology'. Epigenetics is a natural progression of genetics as it aims to understand how genes and other heritable elements are regulated in eukaryotic organisms. The history of epigenetics is briefly reviewed, together with the key issues in the field today. This themed issue brings together a diverse collection of interdisciplinary reviews and research articles that showcase the tremendous recent advances in epigenetic chem… Show more

“…Epigenetics refers to the heritable changes that do not change the underlying DNA sequences, but the gene expression and the functions change, and the process is reversible and environmental. [ 15 ] TCM holds that syndromes are the generalization of the pathological characteristics of human body at various stages under the influence of internal and external environment, which is similar with the “microscopic concept” of epigenetics. Some scholars have proposed that epigenetics is the partial material basis of TCM syndrome diversity, and the microscopic index of epigenetics can be a necessary supplement to the macroscopic syndrome differentiation of TCM syndromes [ 16 ] (Fig.…”

“…The data sets of life have expanded far beyond the central dogma [14,15] and may have even expanded into the realm of “Personomics” [16], clearly expanding the data sets taken into consideration as part of precision medicine [17•]. We now are considering epigenetic alterations such as DNA methylation defects and aberrant covalent histone modifications that occur in cancer initiation and progression.…”

“…The next step in the evolution of cancer therapeutics was guided by the discovery of growth promoting and inhibitory pathways, cell cycle kinetics, including cyclin dependent kinases, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, gene regulatory machineries, and nuclear receptors. This was followed by discovery of epigenome, and micro-RNA network [22].…”
