Epigenetic mechanisms involved in developmental nutritional programming

Abstract: The ways in which epigenetic modifications fix the efects o early environmental events, ensuring sustained responses to transient stimuli, which result in modiied gene expression patterns and phenotypes later in lie, is a topic o considerable interest. This review ocuses on recently discovered mechanisms and calls into question prevailing views about the dynamics, position and unctions o epigenetic marks. Most epigenetic studies have addressed the long-term eects on a small number o epigenetic marks… Show more

“…In men with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, methylation was markedly reduced at all CpGs, reaching statistical significance in subgroups with a sperm concentration of <10x10 6 /ml. These findings suggest that abnormal DNA methylation-mediated genomic imprinting is associated with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia and oligozoospermia (100)(101)(102)(103)(104)(105)(106)(107).…”

“…reduced number of motor neurons in the earliest-forming motor nuclei involved in the control of swallowing. The influence of prenatal VPA exposure on the developmental programming of the metabolic status of the offspring should not be excluded [43]. Moreover, changes in maternal behavior and/or milk production could indirectly contribute to the poor BW gain in offspring, which remains to be examined in detail [17].…”

“…Also, it is possible that methylation crosstalk with other epigenetic modifications such as histone marks in the liver and/or other tissues is important in our model. Given the large number of epigenetic modifiers and marks, we still know very little about the ways in which environmental cues may alter chromatin landscapes and regulatory factors to induce global chromatin modifications and control the expression of individual genes [91].…”
