Epidermal skin grafting in vitiligo: a pilot study

Abstract: Vitiligo is a multifactorial acquired dermatosis characterised by achromic or hypochromic macules and by the absence of functioning melanocytes. Treatment depends on the extent of the affected areas and on disease activity. Surgical techniques have proven to be effective in stable cases but can be time-consuming and, in some cases, aesthetically unsatisfying or painful for the patients. The aim of the study was to assess the clinical safety and effectiveness of a new automatic epidermal skin harvesting device … Show more

“…Furthermore, SBEG may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in the donor site, and placement of the graft is sometimes difficult [10][11][12][13]. Pixel array epidermal grafting with an automatic harvesting system (Cellutome ® ) has been reported to be a simple, time saving, and effective office-based method for stable vitiligo [14]. With this method, the placement of grafts is straightforward, and there is no difficulty distinguishing the epidermal side from the dermal side.…”

“…Janowska et al observed the re-pigmentation after use of the Cellutome™ only by a digital camera (2). Wood's lamp may help to detect early re-pigmentation not only in the forms of pigmented islands but also in those of hypochromic islands, which is hypothesised as the first early sign of re-pigmentation.…”

“…We use Cellutome™, which applies negative pressure and heat, to harvest the epidermal micrografts. This system saves time, reduces pain and leaves no hyperpigmentation on donor sites . However, the prerequisite for success is still the stable status of the disease.…”

“…
Dear Editors, The recent study published in the journal entitled 'Epidermal skin grafting in vitiligo: a pilot study' by Janowska et al (1) illustrated that using epidermal skin grafting is effective and safe for stable vitiligo unresponsive to standard therapies. In this study, additional NB-UVB therapies were given to four patients with minimal repigmentation after the surgery. The European guidelines suggest that a combination of UV-light treatment and surgical interventions could provide the best outcome and long-term stability (2).
