“…In normal mice, whose tears contained higher concentrations of EGF-like substance, the effect of exogeneously applied EGF was not apparent. In addition, it has been shown that the cornea possesses EGF receptors (14,15) and EGF stimulates proliferation of epithelial and endothelial cells ofthe cornea in culture (5, 6). These results are also consistent with the view that EGF plays a role in the corneal regeneration.…”

“…The regenera tive capacity of corneal endothelium is, known to be very limited in primates [1], However, recent studies have given evidence that also corneal endothelial cells are capable of mitotic activity during wound healing [2]. This is in accordance with studies showing enhanced endothelial cell density after appli cation of epidermal growth factor (EGF) [3,4], The exposure of corneal endothelial cells to EGF could furthermore be associated with the stimulation of DNA synthesis [5], Mole cules like EGF could hence also enhance ex tracellular matrix proteins synthesis by endo thelial cells similarly as it has been shown for cultured fibroblasts [6] and for corneal tissue [7] , The control mechanisms for such a stimu lation, however, seem to differ between epi thelial cells, keratocytes and endothelial cells [8] and are still less understood. In spite of the demonstrated physiological absence of EGF in anterior chamber fluid (ACF) [9], the pres ence of EGF in ACF is still subject to discus sion [10,11].…”
